Great HTML5 stuff coming from Microsoft – who’d thought.

A coworker played around with this. The rudimentary animation he made just for testing looked awesome in a desktop browser. Nice and smooth. That same animation was choppy on the iPad. I don’t think it is the fault of the plugin. We have been noticing plenty of animations on the iPad being choppy, unless they are on a very small scale.

While the output of the plug-in can certainly be used as-is, it’s intended to be integrated into your own application. As such, it is optimized for the general case, and it can almost always be improved, depending on each individual situation. But, you’re also correct that on lower powered devices, canvas doesn’t perform nearly as well (yet). Thanks for trying it out!
