We’ve added a simple Groups Dashboard that allows you to see …

Group Activity: Who’s watching videos and unlocking Badges

Ranking in your Group, based on Badge unlocks

More info …

Group pricing is 25% off normal prices, which allows people with large groups to save a bit of money.

You only need 2+ people to sign up.

If you’re already a Member, you can’t be brought into a Group. We’ll address this in v2 of Groups. However, please contact Support if you need help: help@teamtreehouse.com

Sign up here

We have big plans for adding more features to Groups, so stay tuned. This is just an MVP (minimum viable product) release, so we could get it out to you all and see what you think :)

General Design Refresh

Tyson, our new Designer has also done a site-wide refresh on the app. It’s even easier to use now and super fast. Tyson lead the Digg Design Team for awhile so he knows all about optimizing for speed :)

The latest and most powerful version of Numbers for Startups has just been released. It’s an insanely powerful, easy-to-use, spreadsheet that helps you …

Decide if your business or new product is financially viable and attractive to investors

Understand “Red Line / Green Line” analysis, the single most important graph for any venture

Create realistic goals and plans based on hard numbers, including how much money to raise

Track the effectiveness of different Marketing Channels. Know exactly how much to spend on Advertising and when to spend it.

Approach investors with confidence, or invest your own money with a solid plan

Video Demo

Here’s a 3-minute overview of how it works …

Full disclosure: The creator of Numbers for Startups is my brother-in-law, but I have no financial interest in the company and I’m not receiving any money in any form for posting about it. I just think it’s an awesome tool that I wish I had before we started Think Vitamin Membership! :)

Alan and I are building a financial dashboard for Treehouse and the findings have been fascinating. If you only have time to focus on one of these three for your web app, which should you tackle?

Decreasing the number of people that cancel (churn)?

Increasing your conversion rate?

Hiring a sales team?

Net Profit

Cash Balance

Conclusion

These results are obviously specific to Treehouse (aka Think Vitamin Membership) but it’s fascinating to see that increasing conversions by 1% has the biggest effect (huge!) on Cash Balance, but hiring a (successful) sales team has the largest long-term effect on Net Profit. Given a few more months, the Cash Balance would also be best-effected by hiring a Sales Team as well.

To clarify, the Sales Team will be selling large group memberships and their goal is 2 x 100 Member accounts per month and we’re giving them three months to spin up to 100%.

If you’ve been working on improving metrics on your web app, please share in the comments.

If you’re building or running a startup with recurring revenue, you’ve got to buy Numbers for Startups. The price jumps to $19.99 on Friday, so grab your copy now.

It’s a super powerful (but easy to use) Excel model that helps you …

Test the financial viability of your idea

Track the Seven Key Metrics

Know how much capital you need to raise to hit break-even

Track the effectiveness of different marketing channels and their affect on your net profit

Run Red Line / Green Line analysis

Understand your Yield on Cost

Approach investors with confidence

Background

The idea came about when I was having coffee with my friend and Brother-in-Law (Ryan Cumley) this weekend. He’s a tremendously talented financial analyst with insane Excel and logic skills. I mentioned that if he could build a really powerful and flexible Excel model for SaaS startups, I thought it’d be a hugely helpful (and popular). 48 hours later, he launched it.

Just to be clear: I don’t have any financial interest in this. The tool is 100% owned by Ryan. I just think it’s a great idea that will really help startup founders be more successful.

You’re probably wondering why he released this as a downloable Excel file instead of coding it as a web app. The reason is that Ryan has mad Excel skills and in the spirit of MVP, he knew he could get a great product shipped in 48 hours if he used his advanced Excel skills (instead of trying to hack it together in Ruby or PHP).

He’s hoping to add versions for Numbers (Mac) and Google Docs very soon.

If you’re freelancing, running your own studio or startup, you really need to understand three financial statements:

Balance Sheet

Profit & Loss

Cashflow

The easiest way to do this is to switch to an accounting tool that you can use whenever you want, without asking your accountant/bookkeeper to send your reports. It’s imperative that you can log in whenever you want, poke around the books, and annoy your accountant with a lot of questions about what’s happening with the numbers.

We use Xero and I freaking love it. The scary truth is I didn’t truly understand our Balance Sheet or P&L until we switched recently. Since we moved from QuickBooks to Xero, I’ve learned a tremendous amount about what actually makes our company valuable and what really affects our profitability.

The problem is that most of us in the web industry are creative people. Crunching numbers (especially boring things like ‘Amortization’ or ‘Accrued Expenses’) seems almost hawkish – too focused on money and profitability. Based on my seven years of businesses, you just have to get good at it.

If you’d like to get started, grab a copy of Business Accounting for Dummies [Amazon UK or Amazon US]. You can plow through it in a week.

I think there’s a really simple way to build amazing products: Talk to your customers every day.

It requires valuable time, but engaging with your customers on a daily basis has the following benefits:

Reminds you what sucks about your product (so you can fix it)

Shows them you care and that you’re human

Keeps you connected to the product

Uncovers interesting new feature ideas

Strengthens your relationship with customers, thus making you happier and them more loyal

It’s just the right thing to do (your customers pay your mortgage! :D)

Here’s how we do it at Think Vitamin Membership:

Monday through Thursday (Carsonified works a 4-day week), I email around 10 Think Vitamin Members, thanking them for being customers and asking if they need anything. I’d say about 30% of people respond. I LOVE getting replies to these emails because I always learn something new

Post to our private Facebook group. I ask questions or post interesting links. It’s a great way to be visible and connected

Respond to all tweets mentioning us. We use CoTweet to do this

It’s simple really: Be visible, communicate a ton, show your passion. If you have any great tips for staying connected with your customers, please share in the comments!

John J Barton, the lead developer of Firebug, is moving to Google. John’s on Twitter as @johnjbarton

Node.js Knockout starts on August 27th. It’s a a 48-hour coding contest featuring node.js. Locations include Copenhagen, Munich, San Francisco and NYC.

Sync Google+ to Twitter, Identi.ca and Facebook with +AgentG

Hadoop is getting hockey-stick adoption growth among developers. It’s a framework that allows for the distributed processing of large data sets across clusters of computers using a simple programming model. Fun fact: You can run Hadoop on AWS. As an example The New York Times used 100 Amazon EC2 instances and a Hadoop application to process 4TB of raw image TIFF data (stored in S3) into 11 million finished PDFs in the space of 24 hours at a computation cost of about $240 (not including bandwidth). Here’s a (slightly cheesy, but still interesting) video interview with the creator, Doug Cutting.

A great discussion on lost password patterns over at HN

Skeleton is a boilerplate for responsive, mobile-friendly development, created by Dave Gamache. It plays nicely with IE as well.

The point of the excercise was to demonstrate the importance of communicating the personality of a company on it’s website – making it more human. Interestingly, after he showed the video, Innocent got in touch with him about possibly working together.

He recorded the entire design process and sped it up to 3 minutes and 59 seconds and I think you’ll like it.

It’s impossible to remember every available method in jQuery, so when I’m working on front end code using jQuery I’m usually digging through their documentation as well. Instead of using the jQuery site, though, I browse jQuery’s documentation on jqapi.com. It’s a site that format’s jQuery’s documentation much more cleanly and provides a search that’s really easy to use.

Google and Square have just released two apps that allow you to pay for products without a credit/debit card or cash. In this post we’re going to explain how the apps work.

Google Wallet

Google describes the Google Wallet app like this:

“Google Wallet is an Android app that makes your phone your wallet. It stores virtual versions of your existing plastic cards on your phone. Simply tap your phone to pay and redeem offers using near field communication, or NFC.”

Right now, Google Wallet supports two payment methods:

Citi MasterCard credit cards

Google Pre-Pay cards

Eventually, we believe Google carries enough clout that they will be able to do deals with all major credit and debit cards to bring them on to the service. If you sign up for a Google Pre-Pay card, they give you $10 for free to start.

At launch, Google Wallet will be compatible with Nexus S 4G by Google, available on Sprint and will only be available in the USA. Check for local stores that accept Google Wallet here.

How does it work?

Is it secure?

From Google’s site …

Google Wallet requires you to set up a Google Wallet PIN that must be entered before making a purchase. This PIN prevents unauthorized access and payments via Google Wallet. Android phones also feature a separate lock screen.

Google Wallet and MasterCard PayPass™ provide many layers of security. Google Wallet stores your encrypted payment card credentials on a computer chip on your phone called the Secure Element. Think of the Secure Element as a separate computer, capable of running programs and storing data. The Secure Element is separate from your Android phone’s memory. The chip is designed to only allow trusted programs on the Secure Element itself to access the payment credentials stored therein. The secure encryption technology of MasterCard PayPass protects your payment card credentials as they are transferred from the phone to the contactless reader.

Essentially Google is saying you have to enter a pin to pay and that the card details are stored on a physically separate chip on the phone. This means Google Wallet is basically as secure as your physical pin-protected credit/debit card. There will obviously be a great deal of effort by hackers to figure out how to abuse this system.

Square Card Reader

Square is now processing over $3,000,000 per day with their free credit card reader – a pocket-sized credit card reader that plugs into your phone’s audio jack.

On the back of this success, they’ve launched a virtual wallet app for Android and iOS called the Square Card Case.

How does it work?

Instead of using NFC like Google Wallet, it uses the idea of a ‘Tab’. Here’s how it works, using buying a coffee as an example:

Walk into a coffee shop that accepts payments with the Square reader (they’ll probably be using an iPad with the Square reader)

Open the Card Case app and click ‘Use tab’. This connects you to the store’s Square app and creates an ‘account’with the store

Order a coffee

Ask to pay with your Square Card Case tab

They see your name in the Tab list, so they select it

You grab your coffee and go

The money is taken from your account (which is connected to your credit/debit card).

This video shows a working example.

Is it secure?

It’s hard to tell as Square isn’t revealing anything about how the technology works.

Where can you use it?

Card Case currently works in stores in SF Bay Area, New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC and St. Louis.

Our verdict

We’re clearly early days in the cashless society. However, Google and Square have begun the process and we believe it will catch on and eventually evolve the way humans pay for items.

The primary hurdles are security and user adoption. Square’s Card Case is a little confusing and the Google Wallet requires you to have an Android device with NFC.

What do you think? Will we always use credit/debit cards and cash, or is this the beginning of a new age?

Here at Carsonified HQ, we have a design workflow that’s really working well, so I wanted to share. We’re using this to design and build the new version of Think Vitamin Membership, called Treehouse. Let me show you …

The above is a group of hand-drawn wireframes by Allison, our designer. We’ve got a ton of new exciting features in Treehouse so she’s working hard on getting the UX just right.

Our current process works like this …

The Product Team (myself, Alan and Allison) Skype to discuss rough ideas for a page (Example: The new video page)

Allison draws a rough wireframe, scans it, brings it into Skitch, and marks it up with comments

She then uploads the Skitched image to Basecamp (attached to the todo relating to that page)

Alan and I add any comments to the todo in Basecamp

The three of us have a quick Skype call to chat about any of the comments that need clarification

Allison creates the wireframe in HTML with minimal styling

She then commits the HTML and CSS to our GitHub repo

Alan hooks up the markup to the app

Repeat!

We’re finding that each iteration takes about one or two days. Once we have all the app screens done, we’ll have a rough working Alpha which we can then test with real users. Once we finish a round of user testing, we’ll update the UX accordingly and then Allison will do the visual design for the app (then we’ll do another round of user testing).

Example wireframe sketches

Example Skitched wireframe

How about you?

We’re really efficient with this process and it’s working well for us. We’d love to hear about you guys though. What’s your workflow like?

Google has used their insanely smart engineers to create an image compression algorithm that’s just as good as JPEG but 39.8% smaller. It’s called WebP and it’s pronounced “weppy”. You can create WebP images in Acorn, Pixelmator, ImageMagick, Leptonica and XnConvert. If you use Photoshop, you can also install the WebP plugin.

Here’s a gallery comparing WebP to JPEG.

The problem is it’s currently only supported by Chrome and Opera, but if all of us in the web community make enough noise, we might succeed in getting it to be adopted by all major browsers. Please voice your support of WebP by …

Commenting below. If we can get 500+ comments, then we’ll send this post to our contacts on the IE, Firefox and Webkit teams

Re-tweeting this post

Telling your followers, friends and clients about WebP

If we all voice our support of this awesome new image format, the web might just speed up by about 38.9% :)

If you can’t see the image above, then your browser doesn’t support WebP. Come on and help us get this adopted by all browsers!

I came across this on Hacker News and it blew my mind. Fabrice Bellard just created a PC emulator that boots Linux, written in JavaScript. It even works on my iPad.

From the technical notes …

The PC emulator is written in Javascript. The emulated hardware consists in the following devices:

32 bit x86 compatible CPU

8259 Programmble Interrupt Controller

8254 Programmble Interrupt Timer

16450 UART

Real Time Clock.

The code is written in pure Javascript using the W3C Typed Arrays. A slightly slower fallback mode is implemented for browsers missing this support. For the exact list of supported browsers, see the FAQ.

It’s officially supported by

Firefox 4.x

Chrome 11

Opera 11.11

Internet Explorer 9

Hot damn.
