If you are creating a company name with an online presence, the best place to start would be a domain registrar since many times you may come up with a catchy and creative name and you find that the domain is already taken. You cannot have a company name which doesn't match your domain (not if you are serious about the business).

Some company names give you a pretty good clue what they are about without you even having to visit the sites, unlike say 'Google' or 'Amazon':

http://www.beatthatquote.com - (financial quote comparison website, a bit like moneysupermarket.com)

http://www.notonthehighstreet.com - (buy obscure products not usually found in high street shops)

http://www.superstoresearch.com - (online shopping search engine and price comparison site)

One trend that we can see is that more and more company names are becoming longer, perhaps this is due to the lack of shorter domain names in the .com tld.

I work with start-ups and I find this to be the most overlooked area. A lot of people want something that incorporates their names but there is nothing catchy/ "wow factor" or comforting about it. There are still lots of good company names out there COME ON PEOPLE.

Great article Michael.
I have created and named many companies over the years, and each of your points is a valid one.
My most recent company name is ZipQuote. ( The website can be seen at http://ZipQuote.com )
The name is easy to remember, two syllables, easy to spell, fun to say, each syllable starts with a strong consonant and describes the business (Compare insurance quotes fast: Enter your ZipCode, get your ZipQuote)
We were also able to purchase the .com domain through http://RedTruckDomains.com
Michael, you are quite right.. a great name can make all the difference. Thank you for sharing your insights.

You must be looking at a different version then, because the one I saw was horrible mainly due to the overuse of red.

Nevertheless, the name of a company isn't the be-all and end-all. You can have the greatest company name in the world, but if your service and/or products are terrible it will count for nothing.

I used most if not all of the techniques you describe when I had to name my company. It took forever to find a name that wasn't already registered as a parked (unused) dot com. The name we ended up with was not our first choice. In fact, the first acceptable .com we found was unfortunately incorporated already (by a non-internet company).

The speculation on .com names is annoying. I don't mind people staking a claim and selling the names (like real estate) but most parked names have no contact info or way to make an offer. They are set up for ad-spam.

Nice post, just the hardest part is the .com requirement.

Not a bad article, but I'd surely place more emphasis on making sure the domain name is available. If you've narrowed down a list of possible company names, you can rest assured that the list will dwindle even further once you start checking domain availability.
