Yeah.. they do give 110% but their code tends to be fairly amateur and lacks a cohesive design..
I guess using an indian team would be ok for maintaining an aging product while your onshore team dedicate themselves to the next new thing, but for the applications that have been built from scratch by the indian team I sure wouldn’t want to be responsible for maintaining it.

Usually companies that have offshore teams (such as mine) the onshore resources spend quite a bit of time A) fixing offshore’s buggy code before it goes live B) spending hours of company time per day on conference calls, skype and email supporting the offshore team, providing requirements in excruciating detail.

This article responds to genuine frustration and concern, about the quality of code being provided by companies such as InfoSys, HCL Tech., and Changepond etc., with the usual dismissal and misrepresentation that I hear from many middle management. I don’t like the aforementioned companies, and their kind, because I’ve spend a considerable amount of time fixing their Kindergarten code; I don’t appreciate them filling the industry with buggy, unmaintainable apps. Management are conned into thinking they are cheap because they deliver something fast, but somehow neglect to calculate in the millions involved in rewriting their code. Have a look at Prof. Strassmann’s ten year study (Google Video) “which [has] demonstrated that outsourcing does not consistently deliver lower costs and increased profitability”.

to be quite frank, what a load of rubbish. i don’t think you have been to india, you talk like they are japanese and polite. they are some of the most rude and obnoxious people who will happily take your money and tell you NO what you want cannot be done.
Of course they also have some wonderful aspects to the culture. good luck with the outsourcing.

I feel that it is very unfortunate that westerners stereotype workers in India and surrounding countries as stupid, simple or even ignorant. The fact of the matter is that India work force, particularly in the call centers, are very hard workers. In fact, it is considered a very respectful job in their culture. Imagine learning a second language in as little as 3 months and being told to tech support a product, Wow! that seems difficult. I hope in the future we give this country and their work force the respect the deserve. I also think that the US needs to find a better way to compete with their work force.

I’m sorry for those who have had bad luck with any Indian developers. But I’m myself a Ruby on Rails developer from India working as part of an agile team who works round the clock and I find this article very amusing because thats exactly how things workout when outsourcing to developers not only in India but any nation. We have outsource, like your company, to many countries around the world in search of dedicated, reliable and knowledgeable programmers. Suffice it to say that every interaction we have had with Indians, has caused loss of time and money on my end. After each time, I continue to tell myself that the next Indian person I work with should not be hindered (in my mind) because of the interaction with someone else who happens to be of the same nationality. And each time, I am regrettably WRONG! The last interaction with an Indian business man cost me over $30k USD ! So, let me say this win clarity, I’m not talking about small projects with bad coding,.. I’m talking about an interaction with a single nationality that continues to produce untrustworthy results.

I would suggest ANYONE looking to outsource to any country, especially India, do research
on the team you’re considering and ask for referrals,.. then check the referrals legitimacy.

In the end, we’ve positioned an additional team in Asia who we are extremely impressed with and proud of.

I think this stuff about ohhh outsourcing benefits everyone. In theory, it’s supposed to but the reality says otherwise. Outsourcing only helps those who actually run the company. Companies are learning now that sure, you may be able to cut costs by shipping overseas but at what expense. If sales aren’t at the levels they used to be because no one has a job in the country you are trying to sell the products to then you may not have actually sold anything. The #1 rule of finance is that there is no free lunch. There is a good and bad consequence for everything.

How? I have yet to see a single benefit of this. We offshore product manufacturing to China, and end up with a bunch of cheap crap, and close down factories stateside. We offshore software development to India, cut jobs here, all in the name of “saving money for the same output”? Sorry, but in my experience the work output isn’t so great, you get what you pay for.
Where does the cost savings reach the consumer? Oh wait, it doesn’t. Nike, Abercrombie, etc. they all outsource their manufacturing and production to countries where the work is “cheaper” but still we pay $60 for a tshirt, and $100 for a pair of shoes?

Oh wait, I know who this benefits…those running the companies!

Great article. India is also a good place to outsource Developers. The price is just cheap compare to the other country. But then the quality of the software that will be develop is the questionable although Indian people is very good in terms of developing software. Another thing if you really want to outsource people who also has good quality and the price is the just cheap why don't you try to outsource Philippines. The quality is good and the price is just cheap..

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

New tax plans proposed by the Obama administration are aimed at curbing offshoring of IT and back-office projects to countries such as India. The US has been outsourcing so much work to other countries that we are finding our own people without jobs.

Nice article..i thin one of the biggest mistakes ousources make is that they go for the lowest bidder…throw peanuts and get monkeys…anyone that works for less than 10$( and i am going the lowest you can go)…is fooling you somewhere…

Really they have left many Westerners with an unfair impression of India as a pool of labor that, while presumably cheap, is apparently unskilled, apathetic, and awkward at communication.But some how it has solve somehow unemployment problem.

My business has just started sending excess Ruby on Rails development work to a firm in India and the quality of output and cost savings are brilliant.

In order to find a decent company, we did quite a bit of research and narrowed the short-list to 2 possible companies. To make the final decision, we gave each firm a simple project to work through over a week. This trial allowed us to assess which company was easier to work with and who produced the best code. Interestingly, the company we thought would win were not as competent in the trial.

We have had some mixed results with local (Australian) developers and actually have been finding it easier to communicate and get results with the Indian team we are now using.

I'm more concerned about the inability to track some of these developers down. I guess that as long as you make use of a decent escrow service, you have some protection.
