Great,Thank you for your share!I find this particularly strange seeing as both browsers use Webkit so I’d have thought the page rendering would be identical, even with CSS transitions!

I think it is important to start to understand how the concepts are going to work because eventually they will work and then you will be able to gracefully remove your javascript library rendition for something lighter and in theory better performing.

Great article!

Nice practical examples which give the technical basis for readers to put their creativity to.

One of my concerns with unplanned ventures into CSS3 is the use of hover effects to navigate. With touch-screen devices, not only the iPad, becoming more common, the over use of hover effects for effective navigation could make for lots of frustrated and lost mobile-devices visitors.

Implementation of CSS3 needs to be well planned and as you say enhance or add value to the user experience.

Eventually, but I can tell you from personal experience that right now, advanced transitions and animations are all but easy to do just with CSS, and the more advanced you get, the more supporting work you have to do with jQuery or similar.

I would like to point out that the title was not my choice, as I agree that these particular effects are hardly sexy. Explanatory and informative was the goal, and that's all I aimed to accomplish with them.

With the adoption of CSS3, you will see a decline in the use of jQuery or other javascript frameworks for advanced transitions.

Thanks for the intro. A good next step for this article would be an introduction to easing types and plugins- I'm accustomed to the easing controls in AS3 libraries like Tweener and Tweenlite, I yet haven't found anything as versatile in jquery. Has anyone else?

There's a creative decision to make when adding transitions & animation too- adding this stuff for the sake of it can be really irritating for users. The flash community have been through all that, and I think a lot of html5 designers are going to have to learn it the hard way.

My personal tip: make it quick! all interface animations should be 0.3 secs or less.

Impressive as these are, I'm not sure they could ever be described as sexy. Do these kind of things actually arouse you? Living in an age of shoe fetishists and car obsessives, I know that libido can be channeled in strange directions, but CSS!?

Real nice article, and excellent, helpful details. Look forward to opportunities to "tastefully" incorporate the CSS3 transition effect in future designs. Thanks for putting this together, Faruk.

I can now imagine, a web filled with the overuse of CSS transitions. It is sadly, inevitable :(

Like a magic wand... every link and menu item now has a life of its own, like bacteria growing on a culture dish

Like watering a garden... sprouts an infestation of tutorials on CSS transitions that will clutter the blogosphere

Like a car manufacturing plant... out come the templates that have all the CSS transitions, bells and whistles

I get shivers thinking about it.

Awesome article, although I noticed something odd. In Chrome 5 Beta, the animations in example 4 all work flawlessly, whereas in Safari 4 you get the strange Hue effect as described in the article. I find this particularly strange seeing as both browsers use Webkit so I'd have thought the page rendering would be identical, even with CSS transitions!

Anyway, Again, this article contains some useful info, so many thanks :).
