Thank you. I've been searching for ways to take payments on my site and this has been really helpful. Started by looking at Paypal but quickly realised that they are not the answer.

I am looking into BrainTree [http://www.braintreepaymentsolutions.com/] as an all-in-one “player that simplifies the process.” Anyone have experience with BrainTree or comparisons to Chargify/CheddarGetter/Spreedly?

Paypal Website Payments Pro is by far the best option in terms of pricing, but no one supports them! I wanted to go with chargify but all of the fees were totaling around $200 a month!

Great Post, altough is still not clear for many people that on billing the value chain is :

Merchant (Visa/am_express) > Gateway (Ogone vs Authorize.net) > Recurring or Charging Platf (Chargify) > End User

The point is in Europe getting a Merchant is a mass, so the question is is there 1 player that simplify all the process ??

that would help a lot.

Great post Kieran, a useful review of features that met your needs and the costs associated with the providers that you evaluated. I can't agree with you more regarding your conclusion that making sure the provider can support your needs now and into the future is really important, not just the price.

I recently wrote a short post for startups and small businesses that you and your readers may find helpful; discussing the pros, cons and costs of different options for recurring billing that includes the gateways and recurring software providers as well as some "IPSP" resellers that handle recurring billing like Clickbank, Fastspring and 2CO.

Kieran,

Great article. But you missed Recurly! Check out our service. We have a strong offering of payment gateway support (both here and abroad), have a credit card vault allowing merchant customers to easily change gateways as their business requires...and we have a very friendly and flexible API. (all of which is documented at docs.recurly.com).

Check out our recent blog post (and video) which provides an overview of how easy it is to get up and running with subscriptions with Recurly. http://blog.recurly.com/2010/10/how-to-set-up-recurring-billing-for-your-business/

Cheers

Great article - thanks. I have had a quick look at chargify and spreedly - looks like neither supports VAT for European companies (they do offer workarounds though).

Looks like cheddargetter might be an option.

Any other services out there that handle VAT easily?

Very interesting article about hosted solutions. I love hosted services, but sometimes, like lately with Google Wave, even most reputable ones can disappear on short notice, leaving you in the dust with, in this case, something pretty critical: your earnings.

As mentioned in the comments above, there is an option "3", where you self-host a commercial memberships-management software.

To complete the great links above there is a very powerful on-site membership-management system: http://www.joomlapolis.com/content/blogcategory/61/77/ handling single and auto-recurring payments, multiple subscriptions, children-plans, donations, and online product sales all in the same transaction, allowing for great cross-sells. This works on top of popular Joomla and Mambo.

Maybe I'm confused but I'm still trying to figure out what these services offer.

We PayPal WSPP API for all our recurring billing. It works great. Why would I want to have another layer, taking another 2-3%, between me and my money if all they do is tap into the PayPal API?

Why use their API when I can just use the PayPal API?

Interesting article but I wouldn't go for any of these services. Instead I would buy a copy of the superb aMember script.

Some great examples of it being used to handle recurring billing and handling access to apps.

I like how www.GoodGecko.com is using the aMember script.

HI, I went with the payment gateway solution with my wife's website and it was quite a chore. However, I will say that one processor to consider that's not listed is Amazon's FPS web service. It's through the same group that does EC2 and S3 and like those, has a clear, simple API and your customers use the standard Amazon payment process.

What made me chose them was that their pricing fee was automatically the cheapest option based on the individual transaction. Some of the others make you choose a pricing plan when you sign up and the options are usually either good for small transactions or good for big ones. With FPS I automatically get the best option.

Firstly, great article - thanks!

I am based in Sweden and find that a lot of the services require you to be based in the US or if you are based outside the US you need to have a turnover of 3 million dollars or more to be able to use their payment gateway partners (in the case of Braintree) - which is pretty hard for a web app start up to achieve in its first year.

Any one have any recommendations or positive/negative experiences around setting up recurring payments for non US based web apps?

ChedarGetter will be my choice I think - their support has already answered my question while I have been typing this comment!

Hey,

Nice round up of the billing service providers. I've just launched an SaaS app (https://amberleafapp.com) and was dreading the task of sorting out billing integration.

Spreedly happened to come along at just the right time, and seemed a lot less daunting than setting up merchant accounts and using Chargify. Spreedly's ability to use PayPal Pro as a gateway was a big plus.

Spreedly have been brilliant throughout the integration process. Their support team answer emails almost instantly, and their simple API and Ruby gem makes integration with Rails apps quick and easy.

Man, I wish I found this a month ago. I just finished integrating Django with Authorize.net. Bursar (the django app to communicate with authorize) is pretty limited and buggy so much of my time was spent fixing bugs in the plugin... It would have been so nice to have something quick and easy like chargify.

Hi Rick,
I did toy with the idea of including FreshBooks but I wanted to focus on service providers that are just focused on providing recurring billing. FreshBooks has so many other services available I was finding the comparison difficult. It's certainly one to look at though, especially if you already use FreshBooks for invoicing and managing expenses etc.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the Braintree suggestion, that are so many providers out there it might be nice host a comparison chart on this article.

Thanks Chris, glad you liked the post. That's an interesting option, like the combo of PCI compliant storage for your sensitive information and self hosting. Plus, I like the one off payment... very tempting.

Another great site that I absolutely love is Freshbooks (http://bit.ly/a8ikgJ). With their API you can make use of all the different payment methods.

Great article, particularly useful to have a list of the recurring billing service providers out there - will definitely be taking heed of this article's advice in my upcoming projects.

Thanks!

You're missing the 3rd method which is one that can be used with Braintree. You have the form on your site, but you post the data to Braintree (thereby neatly avoiding the need to have credit card details ever touch your servers), then you get seamlessly redirected back to complete the transaction.

You gain the benefit of a hosted gateway, without the need to ever make it obvious that the user leaves your site for a split second.

I've been using Chargify for a couple of months now and can't complain. Seems to be able to do everything I need and they are constantly adding new features.

I have recently been looking into OpenGateway (http://opengateway.net) as an alternative though. OG is self hosted and stores the sensitive payment details with the gateway of your choice (so PCI compliance isn't an issue). Under consideration because it's self hosted which means you have a lot more control over your systems and data.

Nice post!
