HTML5 Please – Which Features Can You Use?

By | 23 January 2012 | Category: HTML5

HTML5 Please is a great resource for determining browser support for many HTML5 and CSS3 Features. Each feature offers a recommendation to either use, not use, use with caution, or use with a fallback. It offers great information like the browser share for each feature, as well as the fallbacks you can use to simulate the feature in incompatible browsers.

My favorite feature is the search, which allows you to filter features by compatibility, for instance what is safe to use in IE8+.

How We Built Code Racer in 4 Days

By | 19 January 2012 | Category: Code

If you haven’t seen Code Racer, you should give it a try. Code Racer is the product of Idea Week at Treehouse. Idea Week is a tradition brought over from Carsonified to Treehouse where the entire team drops what they are doing to work on a completely new project for one week.

This is my recounting of the Idea Week when we created Code Racer. This won’t be a full story as a lot of people worked on this project and I wasn’t in a position to keep track of what everyone was doing. Fortunately our video professionals at Treehouse had cameras rolling, so much of this is documented on video. I can only tell you about what I was involved in, which was the server and client side development.

CodeKit the missing tool

By | 19 January 2012 | Category: Asides

The web is rapidly evolving and it seems like the editors just can’t keep up. If you are web developer using Sass, Stylus, CoffeeScript or Haml then CodeKit is for you. The only drawback is that CodeKit is only available for MAC OSX Lion.

CodeKit automatically compiles Less, Sass, Stylus, CoffeeScript & Haml files. It effortlessly combines, minifies and error-checks Javascript. It supports Compass. It even optimizes jpeg & png images, auto-reloads your browser and lets you use the same files across many projects. And that’s just the first paragraph.

Initializr – Responsive Template

By | 04 January 2012 | Category: Design, UX

If you’re looking for a responsive template, check out Initializr. Initializr is an html/css template that automatically adapts depending on the size of the browser. At the moment it supports mobile views, intermediate views like a tablet or smart phone, and wide views like you might see on a desktop. It looks to be a great start for your responsive templating needs.

Finding the Perfect Icon Set

By | 14 December 2011 | Category: Art and the Web, Design, User Interface

As a designer, I use iconography in nearly every project I work on. Whether it’s just one arrow icon, social media icons or an entire site filled with badges (like Treehouse!) – icons are something I could never live without. I tip my hat to the illustrators who create such invaluable resources for the rest of us to use. (While we’re at it, let’s thank the typographers and photographers, too!)

Ember.js: A More Lightweight SproutCore

By | 14 December 2011 | Category: JavaScript

Ember.js is a new JavaScript framework that was formerly SproutCore 2.0. When I tried out SproutCore for the first time a few years ago, I was impressed with it’s data binding and templates, but I found it included a lot of things I didn’t need or want, like a large UI framework and it’s own recommended toolchain and workflow. I wished I could just use the few core parts of SproutCore easily and leave out the rest. Ember.js is that wish coming true. Its main focuses are: data binding, computed properties, and auto-updating templates.

Check out the Ember.js on Github and read the announcement here.

Ember.js had the code name Amber while in development. It was announced under the name Amber.js, but renamed to Ember.js after there was some confusion with another project

Creating Bookmarklets for Fun and Profit

By | 13 December 2011 | Category: JavaScript

Bookmarklets are just like normal browser bookmarks, but when you click one, instead of taking you to another web page, it performs some action on the web page you are currently on.

You have probably encountered bookmarklets in some way, whether it’s in a bookmarking service like Instapaper, or maybe a cool web design tool that manipulates your page in some way. What you may not realize is that it’s very easy to create bookmarklets. So easy that you can use them not only in your large projects, but you can build quick bookmarklets to help you automate tedious online tasks.

Discover the Color Palette of Any Website

By | 13 December 2011 | Category: Design

Have you ever been enamored with a beautiful color palette on the web? It can be a pain investigating the colors by checking out a stylesheet or using built-in browser developer tools.

The people over at PANDR have created a really cool bookmarklet that allows you to see all the colors on a web page with one click. Simply drag their bookmark link into your browser’s bookmark toolbar and then click the newly created link. Alternatively, you can visit the page containing the color tool and simply type in a URL.

Awesome stuff!
