Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey on Making Ideas Happen

By @keirwhitaker

At the recent 99% Conference in New York, Twitter creator Jack Dorsey gave a short (around 16 minutes) presentation outlining the three  key factors in turning your idea turn into a reality.

Watch “Jack Dorsey: 3 Keys to Twitter’s Success” from 99% on Vimeo

Here’s a quick summary:

  1. Draw your idea on paper. Get it out of your head and share it with friends.
  2. Luck. Assess when the time, and the market, is right for your idea and move ahead. For Twitter this was the emergence of cross network SMS, for Square (Jack’s latest project) it was the global financial crisis.
  3. Constantly iterate your idea. Become a critical editor of your work and make changes in line with user feedback.

What if your idea doesn’t work? Jack argues that it is equally important to know when to stop. If your idea isn’t working recognise this, keep it on file for future projects and move on.

I’m not sure how you can put luck as a factor for making ideas happen, it’s such an undependable variable.

Not terribly new observations! Jack should have a look into Michael Hansen (current CEO of DubLi) – he’s a real visionary genius.

Well he says that luck is not about “fortune” but to be able to recognize oportunities. “Beign able” comes from skill and skills can be learned. So it’s not so variable, just put an effort on beign alert in what’s happening in the world around you

I like the way Jack puts theirs success, like anybody with the correck ammount of effort and patience could do it!. I think he’s right about the whole procces: Draw and Share, look for the opportunity and interact with your users.
